So, what can we do? By getting a personal e-mail certificate, you can send e-mail that is authenticated. This means that there is no question that it really came from you (or at least the workstation that you installed the certificate on - it's up to you to secure the workstation). Additionally, you can encrypt the message (if you know the person you're communicating with) so that the message cannot be read while it is 'in transit' from you to the recipient. This requires that you and the recipient have personal certificates - and that you've exchanged signed messages before. This provides privacy. Personal e-mail certificates are available free from Thawte (pronounced like thought). Thawte is a globally recognized provider for Internet security certificates.
